5 Designer hacks for problem rooms

Every house or apartment has at least one room that’s a challenge. But you don’t need to knockdown walls or undertake an expensive renovation. The Cosmostyle Team have designer tips to disguise flaws so every room looks amazing. Here are 5 of our favourites.

Tip 1:  For small, dark rooms

Making the most of natural light is often a highly cost effective way to artificially give the impression of a larger room. If this is your design challenge, we suggest stacking your curtains past the window so they won’t steal any of your natural light.

Tip 2:  Use proportion to elevate your ceiling

When renovating, a popular designer trick is to increase the ceiling height of compact rooms to give the illusion of space. But you can achieve the same effect by using slimline tracking mounted to the ceiling above your window and adding sheer curtains. It creates a shadow line and visually elongates the wall.

Tip 3:  Warm up chilly spaces

Do you have a favourite reading nook or bedroom that gets a bit chilly in winter? We can add an additional layer of fabric between the lining and your selected window fabric. Not only will this make your curtains look grand and luxurious, it will also provide valuable insulation to keep out the cold.

Tip 4:  Screen out the glare without blocking the view

We often visit homes with spectacular views that homeowners can’t enjoy because of the glare. Instead of constantly drawing the blinds or curtains, let us help you keep the view and stop the glare with a 10% screening blind in black. Yes black! Because the darker the screen, the easier it is to see out.

Tip 5:  Remove an ugly view without blocking the light

Not all views are wonderful. In fact, some are ugly! If you have a window that looks out onto a wall, fence, carpark or similarly ugly view, we suggest adding horizontally split shutters. That way, you can keep the bottom shutter closed during the day without blocking the natural light. In the evenings, simply close the top half of the shutters, if you wish.
