According to the Textile Research Centre, velvet dates back to ancient Egypt and has been recorded in China as far back as 400 BC. However, it wasn’t until the early 12^th century that an Italian city near Pisa began producing velvet in Europe. Even today, manufacturing velvet is complex. It requires a special loom to weave two layers of fabric simultaneously which are then cut apart to create the distinctive velvet pile.

Based in Hertfordshire, UK this family owned business is renowned for producing high quality fabrics and the Alaska range of velvets lives up to their reputation.
