For the love of velvet
Nothing compares with the softness and luxury of high quality velvet. It oozes opulent indulgence and imparts a distinctive style.
According to the Textile Research Centre, velvet dates back to ancient Egypt and has been recorded in China as far back as 400 BC. However, it wasn’t until the early 12th century that an Italian city near Pisa began producing velvet in Europe. Even today, manufacturing velvet is complex. It requires a special loom to weave two layers of fabric simultaneously which are then cut apart to create the distinctive velvet pile.

“Velvet that feels like a cloud”
Some of our favourite velvets are designed and produced by the Ashley Wilde Group who are celebrating their 75th anniversary. Based in Hertfordshire, UK this family owned business is renowned for producing high quality fabrics and the Alaska range of velvets lives up to their reputation. Just ask Shari who describes their velvets as “being so soft, they feel like a cloud”.
The Alaska Velvet range comes in 38 glorious colours – a colour palette so broad it’s hard to think of a colour that’s not included in this range.
